Description

A vivid and interesting antique Karabagh Wedding rug woven around 1880-1890 in very good original condition and with stunning early dyes! Rugs from the region of Karabagh loved to use the deep purple/red/pink tones which were made using the famous cochineal dried beetle dye.  The greens and deep indigo blues enhance this antique Caucasian rug further.  Wedding rugs usually depicted the bride and groom as we can see a third of the way down the rug.

. . .

We think the groom looks happier than the bride! A really beautiful antique piece which would add charm and interest to an entrance hall for example.  The kelim fringes are still showing and original as our the side-cords too, we need to tidy both of them up which our restorer we will do very soon making it ready for the floor.

These pieces were woven in the south-west of Azerbaijan, an area that produced these unusual long corridor carpets. Carpet weaving grew in the 2nd half of the 19th century as the commercial market demanded exciting, bold flamboyant pieces for the West.  Caucasian rugs are famous for their vivid colours and geometric designs.
