Antique Agra Carpet in fantastic original condition and a very interesting design full of animals. Woven with classical colours from this period of Indian weaving, using vivid natural purples and blues.  The wonderful drawing of Buffalo, Lions and mice surround the central motif with an elegant cartouche red border design.  This carpet is in very good condition with a high wool pile and some corrosion to the black dyes.

. . .

A great small format piece woven in Agra between 1880-1890 there is no damage to this rug apart from minimal corrosion to the black dyes which is common on rugs from this city woven around this period.  It is actually a good reference for age and helps along with the dyes and weave to date a piece.

The Indian city of Agra in the late 19th century was an area where carpet weaving began to excel, as carpets and rugs were comissioned for the western market. Persian designs were used, but like Ziegler carpets the designs were generally enlarged to show beautiful palmettes and vines with mainly reds, purples, greens and ivory as the predominant colours.
