Antique Bidjar Kelleh

Circa 1870
330 × 173 cm 10’9” x 5’8”
£14,000

Description

An early antique Bidjar kelleh, dating from circa 1870-80 in fabulous original condition, stunning abrash in the red dyes (abrash being the term for dye change).  The four soft sandy yellow corner spandrels are a particular highlight, as an early dye often using expensive saffron to obtain this colour.  A classical Bidjar design with the central motif floating on the soft red background.  The minor borders have fabulous pale blues and greens for the guard border too.

Condition is really fabulous, with a wonderful soft wool pile and no significant restoration, some preservation to the ends and sides, as you would expect on a carpet dating over 140 years old.  This piece would look remarkable in a wider entrance hall or corridor, on a wood floor, sisal or tiled floor.  We supply underlay with every one of our rugs to aid their condition and provide safety, as this stops their movement on the floor.

If you would like to request a home or showroom visit we can show you this outstanding Bidjar kelleh carpet in person. We travel all over the UK helping customers and interior designers find beautiful carpets for homes, plus our barn showroom is open Monday to Saturday by appointment only.

Rugs from Bidjar are very tough due to their structure which consists of usually five weft threads, two are loose wool threads followed by one taut cotton thread, then a further two loose wool threads. These are tightly beaten together against the knots, creating an extremely tight, compact rug. They tend to be floral in design, with the ‘Herati’ fish design commonly used in the main field and border or the ‘Mina-Khani’ floral design all over as in this example.

We offer the professional service of viewing any of our rare antique carpets & modern rugs in-situ by appointment or you are very welcome to visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey. By requesting a home visit, you can choose a convenient day and time to see this exceptional rare Bidjar kelleh.
