Antique Kurdish Kelleh

Circa 1890
418 × 190 cm 13’8” x 6’2”
£16,450

Description

A fantastic antique Kurdish Kelleh from Northern Persia in a narrow corridor size with exceptional dyes from the late 19th century.  A wonderful and early all over field design too, consisting of the famous ‘Harshang’ design, often known as the Crab design too, less obvious in the Harshang format, a more abstract version of a Crab in our opinion.  The Crab design is more-often seen in Caucasian rugs from Azerbaijan and in particular the main border.  Stunning natural colours, the dyes they created in the late 19th century were truly special and have faded, yet retained their depth of colour.

Kurdish rugs are rugs woven by the Kurdish people in Middle East, predominantly the larger Kurdistan region including south Caucasus and north-western Persia. This is primarily where the rug weaving industry was and still is today.
