Antique Sultanabad carpet

Circa 1890
370 × 275 cm 12’1” x 9’
£35,000

Description

A beautiful antique Sultanabad carpet, which remains in near perfect condition despite being 130 years old.  Woven in around 1890, the vegetable colours used are just perfect and a joy to see.  The madder field is a wonderful warm tone, the restraint of then using an ivory colour for the main border gives the carpet a wonderful airy, uplifting feel.  The additional colours are also superb, with soft greens, pale blues, and wonderful soft yellows.  The design is a classical Mina-Khani design which is fabulous, the measurements and weaving skill that goes into this is very involved – every vine and flower sits perfectly spaced within the field design, with both sides and ends of the field being perfectly symmetrical – a very difficult achievement.

Condition wise this carpet is excellent, with all original ends and selvedges and no large repairs at all.  Hardly any wear to mention, just some corrosion to the brown/black dye which has iron properties, hence this amazing corrosion.

Sultanabad carpets are very important in the history of weaving as Sultanabad was formally known as Arak which was once the capital of Persia in the 1800’s.  Famous carpets such as Ziegler were woven in Sultanabad by the company Ziegler & Co which produced open large floral designs for western tastes and thrived in the late 19th century exporting these carpets to the US and Europe.  Sultanabad carpets are know as older better quality Mahals woven from the mid to late 19th century there pile is much flatter than the younger Mahal carpets and using softer colours rather than the typical reds and blues we associate with most Persian carpets.
