This Ushak carpet is one of our favourites we have ever had in our inventory, the simplistic design, with varying ancient designs, such as the cloud-band motif balanced with the gentle dye palette make for perfection in our eyes! Muted green border with light pinkish tones, greyish colours and faded reds. Off-white dyes can be seen in the corners and border too, which lighten the whole palette.
The floating cloud-band motif or often known as the ribbon design can be seen in three places down the centre of the carpet in a pale greenish to grey tone. This design has been used on Chinese and Persian rugs for centuries as well as Turkish pieces. Woven in the late 19th Century in Anatolia, western Turkey, these exquisite hand-woven carpets have been produced since the start of the Ottoman period (1300-1922). The mid to late 19th century examples such as this became more open and decorative in design and were commissioned more for the Western market in the US and Europe and have since rivalled the look of the famous Ziegler carpets from Persia.
The colour and look of Ushak carpets with muted dyes and softer designs really appeal to todays room schemes too. Easy to place in a room already decorated or to scheme with, fabrics can be chosen to work with a palette as subtle and beautiful as this carpet. Some wear and low areas of pile are apparent on this decorative carpet, they could be improved if required by our expert workshop of restorers. We love the look of this early Ushak and with the large border in green and combined with the saturated reds and golden yellows, making a truly desirable carpet.
If you would like to request a home visit to see this beautiful pale antique Ushak carpet at home, it would be our pleasure to help you. We love to travel nationwide, having visited private customers and interior designers all over the UK for the last 30 years.
Often younger Ushaks or Oushaks will be rich red in colour and use bolder geometric designs. This Anatolian carpet has an almost contemporary feel to it and would work in a modern space as well as traditional. We clean every carpet before offering it for sale and make sure the ends and fringes are secured. A decorative subtle piece ideal for a soft scheme.
Ushak rugs and carpets were woven in the Anatolian highlands south of Istanbul where they used extremely soft wool and using the larger turkish knot made them weave more open designs than Persian carpets. They are increasingly desirable today due to their sometimes softer palette than persian carpets, thus making them easy to place in a drawing room or under a dining table.
