Antique Baktiari rug

Circa 1910
258 × 160 cm 8’5” x 5’2”
£2,500

Description

A large elongated medallion design in the main field on this attractive antique Baktiari rug, this design is derived from early rug patterns produced in the 16th and 17th century.  Amazing natural dyes, with soft pale blues, greens, and reds.  The ivory centre lifts the whole palette and showcases the intricate floral designs. We have washed this rug and the colours are vibrant yet muted due to the age of this piece.  Woven around 1910-1915 the condition is very good with the ends secure and a sturdy wool pile height.

There are some 200 villages in the region of Baktiari, who all produced beautiful rugs around the late 19th century and in some quite striking designs. The garden design, as seen here is a famous design used by Baktiari weavers for centuries.

Make an appointment to visit our barn showroom or you at home soon.  We would love to help you and show you this rug up close.  Thank you.

Baktiari, which is west of Isfahan, is a region where rugs used a similar medallion format to those of Isfahan rugs. This is where the similarity ends, as this village rug is coarsely woven on a wool foundation whereas Isfahan rugs are finer and woven using a cotton foundation. The colours on this rug really stand out on the black main field, which makes for a marvelous nomadic rug.
