Description

This antique Chi-Chi rug is a really stunning one! Late 19th century, rich in colour, all natural dyes, and full of stars, flowers and geometric motifs which are the best features of Caucasian rugs from this period. We love the rare golden yellows, greens and pale blues on this exquisite antique rug.

Brilliant condition and nice corrosion to the brown main border, typical of this dye which had high iron properties to it.  Good sign of early age in antique rugs too.

This rug would add great character to a room, in a bedroom, hallway, study or in front of a fireplace. We always supply our underlay with every rug to aid it sitting flat on the floor.

. . .

Chi Chi rugs were woven south of Kuba in Azerbaijan, which is modern day Daghestan.  These weavers were famous for producing fine, tribal geometric rugs full of vivid colour. The main field design is comprised of stylised floral motifs in geometric form, nearly always represented in rows.  The geometric floral design in the border of this rug contains symbols that are derived from plants and flowers.  These were important to the people of Chi-Chi as they signified fertility and growth among the weavers.
