Description
Woven in the early to mid part of the 19th century this is a rare and unique antique Agra rug, hand-woven with an off white and natural wool main field colour, the weaver has used this for the main border too. Rare to find ivory off white antique rugs and carpets, as the Indian and Persian weavers in the 19th century generally loved to use colour. Ancient dyes are present, using deep black dyes which have corroded down due to their iron properties in the wool, early teal greens and subtle biscuit/sandy tones for the leaves. This rug uses a 16th century Herati pattern as the main design, where we can see two leaves around a small flower. In 16th/17th carpets this would have been clearer to show two fish swimming around a water lily, and this where the design was taken from.
In strong structural condition, lots of soft wool visible and medium pile height over the majority of this ancient rug. Some lower pile in places, and a few ancient repairs too. In general good order for a rug of this age and quality, we have professionally washed and moth proofed the rug so it is ready to be used as a beautiful decorative item on the floor.
The best weavers in India often travelled from Persia to showcase their skill and replicate these 17th century designs. From the 16th to 19th Century many fine carpets were woven in Agra and Amritsar, using the finest sheep’s wool and silk, with Persian patterns often known as Indo Agra’s. The Indian city of Agra in the 19th century was an area where carpet weaving began to excel, as carpets and rugs were commissioned for the Western market. Persian designs were used, but like Ziegler carpets the designs were generally enlarged to show beautiful palmettes and vines with mainly reds, purples, greens and ivory as the predominant colours.
