This is a modern Hadji Jalili design ‘Kelleh’, woven by master weavers in Turkey. The design is taken from workshop carpets made in the late 19th century designed by the master weaver Hadji Jalili. Antique Hadji Jalili kelleh carpets are very highly collectable because of their quality, soft colours and open design, they are also becoming increasingly rare to find in good condition.
These modern reproductions are made in a much finer weave than the more commonly found Agra and Ziegler copies, this particular carpet being made by very skilled weavers in Turkey. The wool used is all hand spun, and the dyes are all of vegetable origin, this means that it is both better looking today and the colours will fade beautifully, exactly the way the prized antique pieces have done over the last 100 years.
