A beautiful antique Mahal carpet with muted colours in good condition all over and using soft reds and blues. The small blue medallion surrounded by the flowing lattice design is very attractive making it a very decorative antique carpet woven around 1900-1910. It would look wonderfully on an oak floor for instance or in a drawing room or study. Lovely colours to work with when putting together a room. Please look at all the additional close up photographs below.
Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the center of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western color palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets. Neighbours to Heriz carpets there designs are very different as Heriz tend to be quite angular and geometric whereas Mahal carpets are generally more open in design and curvilinear.
