A striking and exceptionally rare near perfect condition antique Kazak rug, the black background dye has oxidised over the last 100 years or more and corroded to give the Boteh design an embossed effect.  The thick wool pile all over is quite remarkable as this rug has been in a good private collection for many many years. Woven around 1880-1890 a rare antique Caucasian rug for the collector or to be used as a decorative rug on the floor.  The natural ivory border colour highlights the vibrant star design.  So much interest on this beautiful rug from the Caucasus highlands.

. . .

Rugs bearing the name Kazak come from the highland area of the Caucasus in Azerbaijan whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd.  Depending on the weave some Kazak rugs can be extremely soft to handle as the wool is light and woven on a supple foundation.
