We have just added some additional close up images of this rare ivory background antique Ziegler carpet, it truly does have remarkable colours and the high pile on this piece is fantastic. Woven with a wonderful variety of greens, blues and red and yellows, with a superb large open medallion with large sprays of flowers at each end. This carpet is in very good condition, with only minor old restoration in the main field. Most of the pile is very high and having been washed by ourselves the wool feels soft to touch. We love the colours in this border of this carpet very much, it has some wonderful colour changes (known as Abrash) from blue to green which give it great depth and the extreme outer border the same colour of the field is a great touch and one that looks fabulous set against a wooden floor.
These are famous carpets due to a clever Swiss businessman who In 1883 used his company Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England to establish a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia. Which employed designers from major western department stores such as A B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with bold, decorative all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts. Taking the small intricate patterns of finer persian carpets and enlarging the floral motifs to use on these Zieglers.
